Unit 2: Bear in Mind

A: Intonation:  We raise or lower the tone of our voice to express different emotions
                               or meanings.
For ‘wh’ questions and statements we express with a falling tone.
       Example:  What’s your name?  ↘       or         I want a cookie. ↘
For yes/no questions we express with a raising tone.  Example:  Is it rainy today? ↗

Listen to the dialogue and mark each box with a rising ↗     or falling  ↘ tone.

Waiter:  Would you like some water?
Sally:  Yes, please.  What are your burgers like?
Waiter: Do you like cheeseburgers?
Ours are the best.
Sally:  Yes, I do!  What type of cheese do you have here?
Waiter:  We have cheddar cheese.

Sally:    Perfect.  I will have some fries too please.
Waiter: What sauce would you like with your fries?
Sally:    Just ketchup is fine.
Waiter:  Can I get you anything else?
Sally:    A glass of iced tea, please.
Waiter:  I’ll get it right now.

B: Suffixes: -aught/-ought
We say/pronounce these suffixes the same way- caught and bought rhyme with tot.

Story:  Read the story and circle the aught/ought words.

Yesterday at school, my maths teacher, Mr. McNaughton, caught a student cheating on a test.  I won’t say who it was but he’s quite a naughty boy.  I guess the boy thought he could get away with it but he didn’t.  The boy was very sad and quite distraught after he was caught.  Our teacher brought him to the office to speak with the principal.  I hope he learns his lesson this time!

Listen to your teacher and put a tick in the box when you hear the aught/ought sound.
